Ever since I've been on Combyne I've felt so incredibly gaslit by 'preppy' style, because I, old maid that I am, had always associated prep with prep school and had considered the aesthetic to be an old money sort of anglophilic and sophisticated style and not the garish energetic and youthful style I've seen here. I understand that the definitions of words change and I'm not necessarily here to condemn that, but this challenge was a breath of fresh air because at the very least it assured me that I had not gone mad or slipped into a parallel universe where preppy style meant something rather quite different. What a relief #j1633 #prepschool #oldmoney

Love this outfit and yess you’re totally right. I don’t wanna judge anyone who claims it’s the other way around, but for me the term „preppy“ describes a style which is kinda old money and has a bit a Blair Vibe
But I suppose we could generally define preppy as whatever fashion sensibilities upper middle class girls have at the moment, that could explain the discrepancy between the more 90s plaid skirt preppy many of us old folks seem to be envisioning and the 2020s neon t-shirt preppy that preteens idolize today As much as we like to fantasize about old money fashion, in truth teens and young girls born into generational wealth are more likely to own an Stanley cup and an arsenal of skin care products than they are to own set of pearl earrings and Mary Jane's
@ilovevintage I was theorizing that maybe modern 'preppy' is a misnomer and that the style was originally known as 'peppy', and then I suppose in time one was conflated for the other? Yes it is strange that these two aesthetics which are in many ways quite opposite to one another ended up with the same name.
