In the early 1930s a misanthropic author from New York takes a job as the groundskeeper of an abandoned glided-age mansion. In his tenure of complete isolation he begins to believe hellish presences haunt the manor, but is ultimately driven mad by a sense of post-war nihilism, only finding salvation in the rejection of his once treasured modernists philosophies.
