Samhain: a pagan Celtic tradition originating in ancient times that lasts from Oct. 31 - Nov. 1st. honouring the changing of the seasons from fall to winter, the harvest, and those who have died. It was believed that the veil between our world and the spirit world was thinnest at this time of year- because of this, in the medieval times the holiday was observed by lighting bonfires to ward off faeries, setting extra plates at the table for visiting ancestors, children playing games to entertain the dead, and the windows being left open so ancestors may come in and eat the cake left out for them.
